SARASOTA HERALD-TRIBUNE: David Shapiro beats Jan Schneider in congressional District 16 Democratic primary
Siesta Key attorney David Shapiro earned the right to take on U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan after defeating Sarasota attorney Jan Schneider in the Democratic primary in congressional District 16.
Shapiro, 58, was a big favorite in the primary after raising more than $1.3 million, compared with $73,124 for Schneider.
The financial advantage allowed Shapiro to advertise extensively and overcome the name recognition that Schneider has built after five previous runs for Congress.
Avoiding any criticism of Schneider, Shapiro kept his sights trained on Buchanan throughout the primary. Leading Democrats in Southwest Florida and Washington, D.C., rallied around Shapiro, touting him as the strongest candidate to take on Buchanan.
Schneider ran to the left of Shapiro, supporting Medicare for all, a $15 minimum wage and full legalization of marijuana. But she largely avoided criticizing her Democratic opponent and even defended him against a television advertisement paid for by Buchanan that tried to ding Shapiro’s progressive credentials.
