Sarasota Herald-Tribune: Democrat David Shapiro raises $250,000 in campaign against Vern Buchanan
Siesta Key Democrat David Shapiro announced Thursday that he pulled in more than $250,000 in contributions in the first 10 weeks of his congressional campaign.
Shaprio is challenging Republican U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Longboat Key, for the District 16 seat that includes northern Sarasota County, Manatee County and part of southern Hillsborough County.
“There has been a tremendous outpouring of support since I announced I was running for Congress back in October,” Shapiro said in a press release. “The financial support is just the tip of the iceberg. As I continue to talk with people the more I hear from them that they’re hungry for change, change they’ve been asking for in Washington for a long time and never received.”
Shapiro’s campaign said the candidate, who announced in mid October that he is challenging Buchanan, received contributions from more than 500 individuals. The campaign released a summary of its 2017 fourth quarter fundraising report Wednesday. The full report must be filed with the Federal Election Commission next week.
Buchanan has yet to release his fourth quarter fundraising report. The congressman had more than $2 million in cash on hand for his reelection bid as of the third quarter of 2017.
